Kylie's Wordy Anecdotal Response

Everyone always asks me how I got into this field and to answer that I have to go back to my childhood. I was a strange kid who liked exploring houses and playing detective. I would go over to friendsÕ houses and have to see into every closet, into all the basements and even attics if I could get to them. I eventually earned the nick-name “Curious George.”

At the same time I was growing up on a farm watching and helping my dad build barns and fix everything from hot water heaters to diesel tractors and loved getting my hands dirty making things work. After college, I worked on many construction jobs and reveled in turning old “junkers” into houses of beauty and dignity. Once I added up all my years of work, I was surprised that I had more than ten years experience working as everything from framer and wall finisher to plumber and rough in electrician.

The clincher came when my sister and I bought a house together in Ithaca and had an inspector come through. It was a major “aha” experience. Here was a guy looking in all the nooks and crannies of our house, and explaining what all his findings were, -essentially exploring and playing detective. I knew I had finally found what I wanted to do when I grew up.

I then studied house inspection with American Building Inspection and Training Company. They are the only licensed school for house inspection in New York State. My instructor was Joe Mahr, a residential and commercial building inspector for 20 years and a member of the American Society of Home Inspectors. With their certification, I started inspections in 2003 and I became licensed immediately when licensing laws went into effect in January 2006. Since May of 2007, I have done over 500 house inspections.

My philosophy is that if people are going to be fully comfortable in their house and turn it into a home, they need to understand how it works. To that end, I not only search out and report on all the existing problems a house has, but I also inform my clients how structures in the house work as well as how to keep them safely maintained for years of comfort. Thanks for taking the time to explore this site and I look forward to working with you.

About Kathleen Spooner

Ê I studied to become a Licensed Home Inspector with the American Building Inspection & Training Company, Inc. in Syracuse, NY, and was trained by my sister, Kylie Spooner.
